SEWER LINE REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT

Sewer Line Repair in Sarasota, FL: When Every Drain in the House Backs Up

Water rising in the tub when the washer drains, a toilet that gurgles when you flush another one, or a smell at the cleanout. Those point to the sewer line, not one drain. Call and describe what you are seeing.

A sewer problem rarely announces itself politely. It shows up as the lowest drain in the house, usually a shower or tub, filling with gray water, or as every fixture draining slowly at once. By then the line has been struggling for weeks.

The first question is not how to repair it. It is where the blockage or break actually is, because that decides who is responsible, what it costs in time and disruption, and whether you need a plumber at all.

Is it one drain, or the whole line?

Start by noting which fixtures are affected. The City of Sarasota's own utility guidance treats a problem at a single fixture as private plumbing, and a problem across the whole building as possibly in the City's pipes. That test is worth running before anyone is paid to diagnose.

What to do in the first ten minutes of a backup

  1. Stop running water. That means no laundry, dishwasher, showers or flushing.
  2. Do not pour drain chemicals into a line that is backing up. They sit in the pipe and make the repair more hazardous for whoever opens it.
  3. Keep children and pets out of any room where sewage has come up, and keep your hands off the standing water.
  4. Note which fixtures are affected, and whether it started after heavy rain, a repair or a new fixture.
  5. Call. The plumber will use what you noticed to narrow down where to look.

Who owns the pipe: you, the City or the County?

Sarasota County is split between several utilities, and the answer depends on your address. Homes inside the City of Sarasota use City Utilities, which answers water and sewer emergencies after hours on 941-263-6884, option 2. Many addresses outside the city are served by Sarasota County Public Utilities, whose sewer emergency line is 941-861-6790. Bayshore Gardens and South Bradenton are in Manatee County, so neither number applies there.

Ask your utility directly where its line stops and yours begins, and where your cleanout is. Write down the answer. It decides whether a camera visit is your cost or the utility's.

What a camera inspection should tell you before anyone digs

A camera run is how a plumber turns a guess into a finding. Before agreeing to any excavation, ask what the inspection showed and ask to see the recording.

Ask to see the footage, since it is the evidence behind any repair recommendation.

Clearing the line, repairing a section, or replacing it

Not every sewer problem needs a dig. The honest answer comes from the camera, and the options sit on a spectrum.

OptionFits whenWorth asking
Cleaning or snaking the mainRoots or grease are the cause and the pipe itself is intactHow soon it is likely to return, and whether jetting the line would last longer
Spot repair of one sectionOne failed joint or crack, with sound pipe on either sideHow the repaired section is joined to the old pipe
Replacing the lateralA long run is cracked, bellied or collapsedWhether repairing it without trenching is possible, and why or why not

If your home is older, ask whether any waste line is cast iron. Scale builds inside old iron pipe and catches paper and grease, so a line that has been cleared several times may be telling you something.

Before the excavator arrives: the permit and 811

The City of Sarasota Building Division's guideline exempts clearing a stoppage or repairing a leak only when no pipes, valves or fixtures are replaced or rearranged. Replacing sewer piping is not covered by that exemption. Ask your plumber whether a permit will be pulled and who pulls it. The City Building Division is at 941-263-6494, and Sarasota County Building is at 941-861-5000 for county addresses.

Digging also needs notice. Sunshine 811 asks for at least two full business days before excavation so utilities can mark their lines. Build that into the schedule, and ask your plumber who makes the call.

After heavy rain or a named storm

Backups that begin during or just after a major storm may not be your pipe. Local reporting after Hurricane Ian in 2022 described multiple sanitary sewer spills in Sarasota County's system. If the whole street is affected, call the utility first. If only your house is, call us.

When to call now, and when it can wait

What to have ready when you call

You will reach a plumber who can talk through the next step, not a form. If the problem turns out to be a leak that is wetting a slab or a wall instead, the plumber will say so and point you to leak detection in Sarasota. For what usually changes the price, see what drives the cost of sewer work.

Sewer backing up now? Tell us which fixtures are affected

Call and tell the plumber which fixtures are affected. That one detail usually decides where the problem is.
